The Dead Daisies are a rock band composed of members from Thin Lizzy and Guns N’ Roses. Their sound is similar to hard rock groups from the ‘70s and ‘80s while also including Southern rock roots. There is one slight difference between The Dead Daisies and acts like The Allman Brothers and Lynryd Skynyrd. Former INXS and Noiseworks vocalist Jon Stevens and guitarist David Lowy formed this project with various other Australian musicians. The Dead Daisies is filled with incredible musicianship, including “Lock ‘N’ Load,” a song co-written by Slash. Guitars on this track are incredibly melodic and bluesy but they still contain that hard rock sound that Slash is known for. It is also the longest track on the LP with a couple of impressive solos. “It’s Gonna Take Time” and “Yesterday” are two numbers that reminded me a bit of Zakk Wylde’s project Pride & Glory.
“Yeah Yeah Yeah,” “Tomorrow” and “Writing On The Wall” continue to impress with the guitar playing. There is a nice mix between fast-paced strumming, acoustic and electric chords, and soulful riffs. The rhythm section sets the tone of each song, allowing the guitars to follow. “Can’t Fight This Feeling” features a slow drumbeat that holds down the rhythm. Snare rolls keep the mood light in “Bible Row” and set the quick pace in “Talk To Me.” My favorite song on the album is “Washington.” Keyboards and percussion start the song off before the soaring guitars and vocals kick in.
As a fan of both Southern and hard rock, this full-length was a great listen. The Dead Daisies contain soulful vocals and guitar work while showcasing their experience and exploring faster/louder choruses and solos.
