Emily Wells is a musician heralded for her inability to be tied down by genre or convention. The NYC-based songstress has used diverse elements from hip-hop and experimental dance throughout her career. In her latest album, Mama Acoustic Recording, Wells takes a slightly tormented/introspective route. Her angelic voice sounds pained and a little spooky, as if she had been outcast by God to roam the universe alone for all eternity, looking for a purpose never to be found. She’ll be playing at the Lincoln Center’s free outdoor festival on July 25.
