From Helsinki, Finland, The Latebirds have been around since 2000 and have just released their third album, Last Of The Good Ol’ Days, featuring 13 new tracks recorded in the valley’s of southern California and the mountain tops of Woodstock, NY.
The title track sets the tone for the entire album reminding us we’ve got one life to live. The self-titled tune begins on piano with lead vocals singing, “We’re all just born to die eventually.” The song builds when guitars, organs, bass and drums are gradually added in. “Time To Live” is an upbeat catchy rock anthem singing about what it means to live in the present and take action when we speak. “Among the Survivors,” “Time Revisited” and “You Cynical You” bring glorious all-Americana prestige, great for listening to while on a summer road trip.
“Kickin’ Me” may very well be the best song on the album. The power-pop/rock track will have you dancing to the beat and perhaps even doing the twist. However, my personal favorite is “Fearless,” a bluesy rock song that renders lingering guitar licks and leads that will have you going back over and over again.
Wrapping the disc up is “Light At The End Of The Tunnel,” leaving me to believe that The Latebirds are here to stay. The record carries out easy-going, relaxing melodies with musical influences from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and even some MC5. A bonus disc, Woodstock Sessions, is included, offering five bonus tracks closing with Townes Van Zandt’s “To Live Is To Fly.”
