Greetings! I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Brian Grego of A Balance Between about their new record, shows, and so much more. If you live locally, you will want to check these guys out; they are the real deal!
First and foremost, it’s been a while since we spoke. We are gearing up for the release of your new album, Transcendence, due out this spring! Is everything going according to schedule?
So far, so good. I’m sure every band can tell you about the inevitable delays and setbacks that come with the process, but this time around we were lucky to have been funded by a successful crowdsourcing campaign. It has helped us create this album with minimal downtime.
Can you tell us a little bit about this record; the writing process, style, and is it different from what we are used to hearing from A Balance Between?
While our core sound is still present, “Transcencence” finds us delving into new territories and atmospheres. We are all quite excited by the prospect of musical progression, so it allows us to remain open about new ideas and influences. We have pushed ourselves to create a great album, and believe we have done just that.
Will there be a lead single you guys are releasing?
We have it narrowed down to two tracks, “Immanence” and “Misleader,” both of which we have recently finished shooting videos for.
Now I also want to talk live shows. Working with you all in the past, I know you put on one hell of a set. Will you guys be touring/playing an album release show at all?
An album release show is in the works, as are many other shows in the Tri-State Area. Once the album has been released we will be playing often and looking to extend our reach. It will be a very busy year for us.
You have all been a band for a few years now; what would you say has changed in the local market the most over time?
We feel that a strong DIY work ethic has only become more important over time, especially when it comes to standing out in the local market. While social media is a great tool for reaching a new audience, it can also make bands complacent that they’re doing enough to promote by posting a few times before an event. Nothing will ever beat frequent performing and networking face to face with the people you’re trying to win over.
For readers who may have not heard A Balance Between yet, is there a specific song you would start them off with and why?
We would suggest “Your Own Hell” off our EP Negative Space. It blends our signature heaviness with a more melodic approach to songwriting that now defines us as a band. You will definitely hear that aspect becoming more apparent on “Transcendence.”
That being said, let them get to know you! Where can fans get in touch?
