Locals, we meet again. Closing out the year, isn’t it crazy? It seems like just yesterday we were at New Year’s Eve parties dancing our butts off. Although, it is hard to get in the holiday spirit with this December heat wave we have been having, but I am not complaining! Don’t reference me on this article when it eventually starts to snow!
While I am at it, I wanted to congratulate all of the nominees and winners on their Asbury Park Music Awards. It was a pleasure being nominated once again for Top Journalist for the best publication around, The Aquarian Weekly! I heard it was an amazing night filled with top-notch performances and much more. So again, congrats again to everyone who was involved, performed, was nominated, and took home the trophies!
All right, now let us get back to business on the music front, shall we? This week, I want to chat about a band that was recently sent me way through The Aquarian inbox that I am so happy I stumbled upon. I have been looking for a fresh and innovative rock band, and I think I may have just found it. You may have heard of them, because they have quickly built a solid foundation on the local front, otherwise, I will introduce to you now.
Purple Pam & The Flesh Eaters are based out of New York City. This band has many things to celebrate, including the release of their first album Victory On Your Deathbed. Founded in 2011, this four-piece “power rock/metal/and blues band produces timeless music” for all ages and fans. Members consist of Purple Pam on vocals, Merx Mercado on guitar, Daniel Martinez on bass, and Jeanne Carno-Rosenberg on drums. They state that their influences all vary, and you can really hear that reflected in their diverse sound. It’s something new here; I cannot exactly put my finger on what is so innovative about it, but it seems like a breath of fresh air to me.
The first track off of their new album that I sampled is called “Bring It On,” and boy they did just that. I had this on my headphones at the gym, and it brought me to one of the best workouts I have had in a long time. The fierce and heavy chords almost remind me of something Halestorm would release, smacking you in the face and leaving you out to dry. I love the riffs and vocals on this one; they are extremely powerful and demanding.
Another track you definitely want to try out is called “Identify.” The reason why I like this song so much is the lyrics; they are meaningful, noteworthy, and definitely relatable to many listeners on various fronts. Take a listen and you will see what I mean. I am uncertain who wrote this track, but I’d love to learn more about the meaning behind it.
To turn the tables, you should also take a blaring listen to “Call You Out.” I love this track; it could be an anthem for all ages. This one is more rock and roll and not as heavy, and I mean that in the best way possible. You really get to focus on the message behind the music. I have a feeling a lot of girls would love to blare this track and sing it at the top of their lungs to some of their exes, just throwing that out there.
This album is compacted with a little something for everyone, and I really think many musical fans can identify with this band here on some level. I highly recommend you pick up a copy, or stream it online.
If you want to learn more about Purple Pam & The Flesh Eaters, you can visit their Bandcamp or Facebook page at Facebook.com/PurplePamTheFleshEaters. They are very interactive with their fans on social media, so be sure to tell them Maria sent you. While you’re at it, you can stream their new record on Spotify, and check out their live show schedule for 2016, as I have a feeling this is a band you want to get to know soon.
I will be back next week with another local band of your liking. In the meantime, keep on rocking!
