I got to check out a great band from East Brunswick, NJ live a few weeks ago over at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ. The singer was extremely talented and a hell of a songwriter. I’m talking about Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son. This might sound like a weird mix, but they reminded me of Springsteen meets Foo Fighters. Singer Bobby Mahoney was a great performer and really knew how to command his audience. That’s a very good thing to see in a young singer.
According to their bio, Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son formed back in December 2010 in East Brunswick, NJ, but back then, they used the simpler name of Seventh Son. The original intention for the band was supposed to be for a one-and-done show, but the band suddenly caught on locally, so they decided to start playing Jersey rock circuit. In 2012, Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son released their first CD, Only Ashes Remain, a disc that featured both studio and live recordings. In 2013, the band was nominated for “Top Young Band” at the coveted Asbury Park Music Awards. This new success earned the band opening slots for bands like The Gaslight Anthem, John Eddie, The Hold Steady, John Herington, as well as headlining shows of their own. In 2014, the band rebranded the name to its current name, Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son, while trying to finalize their lineup. The band currently surrounding Bobby is guitarists Jon Alba and Dan Cohen, bassist Ryan Lizotte and drummer James McIntoshe. Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son would release their first full-length studio album, Friends In Low Places, which earned the band some rave reviews and really established them as forced to be reckoned with on the music scene.
This past July, the band released their sophomore effort, The Outskirts, which features 10 brand new songs written by Bobby Mahoney and guitarist Jon Alba, including the leadoff single, the title track, which there is a music video for on the band’s website, bobbymahoneymusic.com, where you can also buy The Outskirts, find out more about Bobby Mahoney And The Seventh Son and find out where they’re playing next!
NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had the opportunity to judge a battle of the bands over at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ to play The Rock Carnival. This opportunity gave me a chance to see bands that I’ve never seen live like the crew from Flowers To Flames. I’ve been a fan of the Unverricht sisters, Donna and Nicky, since I saw them perform at Raceway Park a few years ago with Marlboro School of Rock. These girls are like the second coming of Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, only way younger. With brothers Max and Ethan Boras rounding out Flowers To Flames, they are a well-rounded band with some amazing stage experience already. They were extremely fun to watch and who doesn’t want to hear a cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper?” For more on Flowers To Flames, visit facebook.com/FlowerstoFlames.
The gang from Midnight Mob will be releasing their new EP this December. They’ve been hard at work this past summer on it and will be releasing it by way of PledgeMusic, which seems to be all the rage lately. The Mob will be celebrating their EP release with a party at Arlene’s Grocery in NYC on Dec. 5. For more info on Midnight Mob and their upcoming EP, visit MidnightMob.com.
And finally, coming off the heels of an amazing show at The Food Truck and Rock Carnival, me and my bros from Rahway will be opening for Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Famer Ace Frehley at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ this Friday night. Feel free to contact me for tickets! Yes, that was a shameless plug! Also performing will be my buds Knucklebone and Brand Of Julez. Rahway has also released their new EP, Grand Design, which is available now at rahwayband.com, where you can also buy tickets for Friday night.
That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140, Little Falls, NJ 07424, or you can email me at tim@theaquarian.com, where you can also let me know where you’re performing next!
Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
