Since their humble beginnings in 1981, CMJ Music Marathon has brought together 120,000 musicians, avid fans and industry enthusiasts to descend into the greater New York area for one week out of the year in the month of October. Regarded as one the most important channels to help upcoming artists to reach for higher states, this lavished annual event continues to outstandingly grow in significantly large numbers by allowing more than 1,400 acts to have the opportunity to play in over 80 nightclubs, theaters and concert venues that are widespread throughout both Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Coming together from diverse artistic backgrounds and unique music scenes, there are many vibrant acts that will be appearing at CMJ this year. Making their way onto the list of this year’s initial lineup, CMJ Music Marathon 2014 will include performances from Slowdive, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Kills and Moon Duo.
Not only will CMJ Music Marathon 2014 embrace many new and aspiring acts with open arms, we will also see the return of some familiar faces as well. Along with a variety of triumphant CMJ returns this year including the likes of Cold War Kids, Luluc and Courtney Barnett, CMJ Music Marathon 2014 will also feature performances by the London-based alternative quartet The Horrors, who first appeared on CMJ back in 2006, and Gerard Way, who will be coming back as a solo entity since playing at CMJ with My Chemical Romance in 2003.
Several other featured performers that will be playing at this year’s festivities include the up-and-coming Liverpool-based indie quartet Circa Waves, Sydney, Australia’s Little May, the mystifying Brooklyn-based indie trio DIIV, the Sheffield, UK-based quartet The Crookes and Taking Back Sunday guitarist John Nolan, who will be performing a solo set for No Sleep Records’ CMJ Showcase at The Paper Box in Brooklyn on Oct. 21.
While CMJ Music Marathon delivers a vast onslaught of delightful and mind-blowing musical events for fans and musicians alike to be a part of, CMJ also offers engaging daytime conference events from over 100 panels that will feature many renowned speakers within the music industry.
Among these highly innovative workshops, an Entertainment Business Law Seminar that centers its focus on the legal aspects of the music industry will take place, as well as the Marathon’s annual College Day, which dedicates the entire day specifically to events geared for college and non-commercial radio programs.
With a shining mission to bring to life an envisioned promise that these rising stars will fully establish themselves as potential headliners for years to come, CMJ Music Marathon is truly a defining stepping-stone for genuine talent to blossom. While we’ve seen these festivals move mountains for a variety of musicians who are blessed with success and sincere artistic fortunes, you are guaranteed to discover not only your next new favorite artist, but also a profound act that will catch everybody’s eye and talk about for years to come.
