My boy Scotty O. recently texted me about a great band he saw at 10th Street Live in Kenilworth, NJ, a few weeks ago opening for the band Shat. The name of the group was Super Snake and because Scotty was so enthusiastic about them, I had to check them out. They were insanely awesome! After hearing songs like their new video “Yes, I’m A Doctor,” “Frank Booth” and “Stringer Bell,” I felt that they would be a perfect match with NYC’s Panzie*. Both acts have that heavy street sound that to me is very reminiscent of Faster Pussycat meets The Cult. It’s a great sound that is heavily guitar riff-driven surrounded by some catchy vocal melodies. Me likey!
Super Snake are a quintet made up of five of the greasiest, grimiest, grossest guys that Northern and Central New Jersey has to offer! They formed in January of last year with the hopes of writing something that would leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Instead, they ended up writing nothing but heavy, ball rocking ear candy. Singer Jerry Jones, former leader of acclaimed psychedelic blues band Trophy Scars, is the head Snake, and he’s surrounded by guitarist Gregg Kautz formerly of I Am Heresy, guitarist John Pinho, bassist Jesse Mariani, and drummer Vinnie Fiore. So these guys are no strangers to the NJ music scene. They just want to make “heavy” sexy again.
Super Snake released an EP called Summer Girls only eight months after forming, and the CD received them some notoriety on the scene. Back in March, they released their latest opus, Rider, and a music video for their song “Yes, I’m A Doctor” to accompany the disc. You have to check these guys out! They’re super heavy and Super Snakey! If Scotty O likes them, you will too! Check them out at facebook.com/supersnakerock.
NORTH JERSEY NOTES UPDATES:
One of the few artists who still send me updates on his band is Steve Bello. He tells me he’s currently writing new material with his bass player, Joe DeMott, and that he’s landed a couple more endorsement deals with Gravity Guitar Picks and Digitech’s Whammy pedal. You know why Steve gets these endorsement deals? Because he is an absolutely amazing guitar wiz! Check him out for yourself at reverbnation.com/stevebello.
My boy Jorge Avila just emailed me the link to a new song from one of my new favorite local bands, Apostrophes. I wrote about them a few months back and it turns out that they just released a new track called “On My Own.” The song is awesome from the opening riff to the melodies to the hook. I don’t say this very often, but I am a fan! Keep an eye on Bloomfield’s Apostrophes this year and check them out at reverbnation.com/ap0str0phes.
And finally, for those of you who had tickets to see Godsmack frontman Sully Erna at the State Theatre with my bros John Kosco and John Eville opening a couple of weeks ago, then you obviously know that the show was cancelled due to an Erna family emergency. Well, good news! That show has been rescheduled for May 31. Tickets from the original date will be honored for this event. If you don’t have tickets, log onto statetheatrenj.org/sully_erna.
That’s all for now! If your band is from North Jersey, and you want some exposure, send your press kits to Arts Weekly, c/o Tim Louie P.O. Box 1140, Little Falls, NJ 07424, or you can email me at tim@theaquarian.com, where you can also let me know where you’re performing next!
Just remember….We’re all in the same boat, so every little bit of exposure counts!
