Bezoar is a Brooklyn-based stoner metal band that is slowly making their way into the scene with their debut album, Wyt Deth, coming in August. There are specific characteristics to this type of music that make it distinguishable among its listeners. However, Bezoar uses some aspects that are very special.
One would not know what to think of, in terms of this being a stoner metal band, upon listening to the first track, “Burn Everything.” The song is done acoustically with female vocalist Sara Villard lightly bringing out a ‘70s inspired sound. What makes the record stand out is that her vocals sound this way throughout the entire album though there are primarily droned out, heavy, sludgy instruments behind it. The dark influences are apparent the entire time. The song, “Are We Not Alone,” is one of those examples where a title to a song seems to fit the music and the song itself perfectly. As the record comes to a closing, the songs seem to wind down but still show character with a rekindling of their acoustic sides, only this time there are evil organ sounds in the background. Wyt Deth is an album that is absolutely incredible in every way when it comes to this genre. If Janis Joplin and Electric Wizard birthed a music child, Bezoar would be the by-product.
There are times in music when it is tough to find an old sound that still emulates a feeling of comfort and familiarity. When it comes to Bezoar, there is a total establishment of what alternative music fans may be searching for, as far as constant, distorted feedback with a touch of the old school. These belligerent Brooklynites have succeeded in their trade and have proven to be masters of their craft.
