This music sounds a lot like something I would expect to hear on a vinyl at a fancy Mediterranean restaurant while I try to woo the girl of my dreams. It’s not to say that this music is pretentious or anything but Deolinda have a sound that is very much their own. There is not a single electric instrument to be heard in their music, the guitar work is done on Nylon and steel-string acoustic guitars and they have a very obvious Spanish influence. The main focus of the songs is undoubtedly the voice of Ana Bacalhau, which is absolutely wonderful. I do not speak or understand any Portuguese but that did not detract from my listening experience a single bit. She has a love of singing that comes through in the music and it only helps the songs appeal to a wider audience. They’ll be embarking on their first American tour, which will have them at Joe’s Pub on Oct. 10.
