Portugal. The Man almost made it into the annoying indie-pothead category, but since their songs aren’t too long and have soda pop shop harmonies, they don’t give the usual jam band headache. Alaskan natives transplanted to Portland, Oregon, have multi-layered tracks filled with slide guitar, organs, weird outer space sounds, and singer John Baldwin Gourley’s unique high pitched voice, creating a pleasant cluster of sounds. Their fourth album, The Satanic Satanist, due for release July 21, has traces of The Flaming Lips and The Coral. They will be playing at Union Pool in Brooklyn at 9 p.m. on Aug. 4 and on Aug.5 at the Mercury Lounge at 9:30 pm. Both shows are 18-plus. portugaltheman.net.
